The Four Way Test Speech Contest

  1. The purpose of the contest is to encourage youth, Rotarians and the community at large to more completely understand, encourage and foster the principles of Rotary and the object of "Service Above Self".
  2. The speech contestants may speak on any subject to which they can apply "The Four Way Test". The speech must reflect clearly the practical application of all four points of the Four-Way Test. The Four Way Test of Rotary is as follows:

Of the things we think, say, or do:

    1. A. Is it the TRUTH?
    2. B. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
    3. C. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
    4. D. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Note: In the past this has been missing from some of the speeches. It could be due to students not fully understanding that the judges must be able to "hear" the application of the Four Way Test in their speech.

  3. Contestants must be currently registered students from area high schools and must be sponsored by area clubs.
  4. The duration of the presentation shall be approximately seven (7) minutes. The speech cannot be read verbatim, but note cards may be used at the club and area competition level (limited to one 3x5 card at the regional level).
  5. Contestants shall declare their intent to participate to the hosting club.
  6. Date, Time and Location of Club Contest: should be arranged by clubs.
  7. The speeches will be judged by a panel of Rotarians which be arranged by the clubs.
  8. Suggested Awards: 1st place-$100, 2nd place-$50, 3rd place-$25
  9. Each club winner will compete in his/her area competition to be determined by the area coordinator.
  10. The three area winners ( 1 north, 1 south and 1 central) will then compete at a time, date and location to be determined. The winner will receive $900 and the two runner-ups will each receive $300, which will be awarded at the competition.
