Governor Laura’s February message

Bringing Peace through Service is what we do.  When we teach someone to read, give a warm coat, bring clean water, raise money for disaster victims we bring Peace through our Service.  When we help those who hurt, we bring Peace through our Service. When we provide answers and solutions to those looking for help, we bring Peace through our Service. And let us not forget about being at Peace with ourselves. How different would your life be if you didn’t have Rotary?

Remember April 27th is Rotarians at Work day.  On that day, volunteer at your local women and children’s shelter.  For more information, contact AG Fred Ehler at fredehler@comcast.net.  Peace begins at home.

Give with pride and confidence to The Rotary Foundation.  We returned from Kenya with Peace in our hearts. We met with leaders in Kenya who are working hard to make their communities and their country better.  We met with Rotarians, teachers, dentists, government officials, social workers, and community leaders who are passionate and committed to bringing a better life to the people of Kenya, especially to the children. Your global grant is a part of that effort. Rotarians, because of your contributions to Kenya Smiles, you are improving the education and health of the beautiful children of Kenya. Over and over again, we heard the children say “Thank you”.

Donate to The Rotary Foundation on February 23rd , Rotary’s 108th birthday.  Beginning that day, and until supplies last, make an on-line donation to The Rotary Foundation and get extra Foundation Points. District 5160 will match your donation to The Rotary Foundation, up to 250 points. So on February 23rd, ready, set, go!  Simply email your donation confirmation to laura@rotary5160.org and we’ll credit the points.

Join the Paul Harris Society. Donate $1000 ($84 per month) and pledge to continue to give that each year (to the best of your ability). Join now and be our guest at our Paul Harris Society “Pot of Gold” celebration on March 17th at the Ken Behring estate in Blackhawk.  Interested?  Send your inquiry to Paul Harris Society Chair PDG Stan Smalley at SSmalley@mce-corp.com

The next Rotary Year will be here before we know it, introducing the 2013-14 Rotary theme.  But first……in baseball they call it Spring Training season.  In Rotary, we have Spring Training too.  It starts with training our next team of Presidents at PETS. It is no small training session and it is like no other.  Nearly 600 Presidents will be in the house at Far West PETS, it starts the evening of Thursday Feb 28th in San Jose.

Then it is on to training for Club Leaders, New Rotarians and all involved in making Clubs tick.  This year we call them Summits and you can find one of them at a location near you: March 23rd at Butte College, April 20 at Shasta College in Redding and May 4th at the Vallejo campus of Solano Community College.

 Rotarian in the Spotlight –

People join Rotary for different reasons.  Some join for fellowship, some for business, some join for service opportunities.  Our RITS this month was “forced to join” by a woman . . . a woman Rotarian, club president and past Assistant Governor!  Who was this “forceful woman” and how and why did she put the “whammy” on this guy?  Find out Pittsburg Rotarian Steve Krank’s inspiring story by clicking here!

What is the “Pickers Squadron’s” secret technique to get responses from their community?  Edi Birsan <edibirsan@astound.net> wrote:

This morning’s Concord Transcript in the CCTimes brought in three phone calls to my house with offers of fruit donations.
The key in listing the information on the Picker Squadron and I suspect now for ALL media outreach on projects and recruitment is to include a home phone number of someone who people can immediately call. People who READ newspapers are more likely to pick up a phone to talk to you than to sit down and write an email though I provide both in the ‘press releases’.
